The Mercator was the training ship for the officers of the Belgian merchant navy, in service from 1932 to 1960. Now the ship is at anchor in Ostend, where it is maintained in its original state. You can visit include the dorms, the mess of the Cadets and the operating room. The audio guide leads you through the whole ship. You'll find out what a 'honde-wacht' is and what the schedule for the young fellows in training entailed.
